The latest Ministry of Education report says the minimum qualification for Advanced Level in Sri Lanka is passes in five O/L subjects with three credit passes, including Mathematics or Sinhala. This is the exact benchmark used in the Ministry’s English report for candidates who sat the 2024 O/L examination in 2025.
That result does not automatically guarantee a place in a specific school, A/L stream or English-medium class. Schools can select students according to results, vacancies, available teachers, laboratories and the subjects they offer.

You can check the wording on page 144 of the Ministry’s General Education performance report PDF. The report records 245,735 candidates as qualified for A/L from the 2024 O/L examination, which was held in March 2025.
Important language note: the English report itself says “Mathematics or Sinhala.” It does not explain the equivalent wording for every language medium in that table. Tamil-medium students, or anyone whose result does not fit that wording clearly, should confirm eligibility with the school or zonal education office.
What do “five passes” and “three credits” mean?
The Ministry benchmark has two parts. The candidate needs a pass result in at least five O/L subjects, and at least three of those results must be credit passes. The English report then adds the wording “including Mathematics or Sinhala.”
Do not count only the three strongest subjects and ignore the total passes. Equally, do not assume that five simple passes meet the three-credit requirement. Use the official result sheet and ask the school to confirm how it applies the Ministry wording to the candidate’s language medium.
The benchmark answers a national statistical question—whether the O/L candidate is counted as qualified to proceed to A/L. It does not specify which A/L stream the student must take and does not compel a school to create a place or subject combination it cannot offer.
Why the wording “Mathematics or Sinhala” needs care
The wording is taken from the latest English Ministry report, not rewritten by Advice.lk. Because that table does not explain every medium and language case, it would be unsafe to invent an equivalent rule for Tamil or another result pattern.
If Mathematics is not passed, or if the candidate studied in Tamil medium, take the official result sheet to the current school, intended school or zonal education office. Ask for a written eligibility decision before an application deadline expires.
Is five passes and three credits enough to enter any A/L class?
No. It is the Ministry’s published general qualification benchmark, not a promise of admission to every Grade 12 class.
There are two different decisions:
- Are you counted as qualified for A/L after O/L? The Ministry report supplies the five-pass, three-credit benchmark above.
- Will a particular school admit you to your chosen stream and medium? The school may rank applicants and fill only the places it has available.
The Ministry’s circular index includes Circular 27/2013 on admission to G.C.E. Advanced Level classes. Its admission framework addresses student selection and vacancies, which is why a qualifying O/L result and a school placement are not the same thing.
If you are continuing in your current school, ask the principal or A/L section head for the current internal selection notice. If you are changing schools, obtain the application notice for that school and stream.
Common O/L result scenarios
You meet five passes and three credits
You may meet the published general A/L benchmark, but you still need a place in a stream, subject combination and medium. Ask the school whether selection is automatic for existing students or competitive by O/L grades.
You qualify generally but miss the school’s Science cutoff
This is possible. A school with limited laboratories, teachers or places may use higher Science and Mathematics grades for Biological or Physical Science. Ask whether another school has vacancies or whether Commerce, Arts, Technology or another suitable pathway is available. Do not choose a stream only because it accepts the result; compare the subjects with future study plans.
You have fewer than five subject passes
You do not match the five-pass benchmark quoted in the Ministry report. Ask the school or zonal office about resitting O/L subjects and check the current Grade 12 Vocational Stream intake. Do not assume that an unofficial private course changes eligibility for a government-school academic A/L class.
You have five passes but fewer than three credits
The result does not match the three-credit part of the published benchmark. Confirm the official position and ask about resitting, vocational education and other recognised education or training pathways.
You passed five subjects but not Mathematics
The Ministry’s English wording says Mathematics or Sinhala. Advice.lk cannot determine an individual case without the full result and language context. Obtain confirmation from the school or zonal office. Separately, a preferred A/L stream may use Mathematics performance even when the student meets the general benchmark through another subject.
You want to change schools for A/L
Meeting the benchmark does not reserve a place at the new school. Apply during its stated window with the official O/L result and requested records. Confirm the three subjects, medium and campus before accepting; “Science,” “Commerce” or “Arts” alone is not a complete subject offer.
If your result does not meet the benchmark
Missing the academic A/L benchmark does not mean education has ended, but the next step should be based on an official route rather than a promise from an unrecognised provider.
Check the complete result first
Use the official result and count both total passes and credit passes. Do not make a decision from a screenshot that omits subjects or from someone else’s interpretation of the grades. If a result is withheld, under review or subject to another official process, ask the Department of Examinations and school how the pending status affects application deadlines.
If the issue is the wording about Mathematics or Sinhala, take the full result and language-medium details to the school or zonal education office. This page does not substitute a guessed rule for an official individual decision.
Ask about an O/L resit
A student may consider sitting relevant O/L subjects again, subject to the Department of Examinations’ current candidate rules. Before registering, ask which missing result would change eligibility and whether the intended school will consider the later result for Grade 12 admission. Resitting a subject and securing a school place are separate steps.
Create a realistic study and timing plan. Check the official application notice, examination date, result timing and documentary requirements for the relevant year. Do not assume that an old private-candidate calendar remains valid.
Check the Grade 12 Vocational Stream
The vocational stream described below can be a recognised alternative for students with different strengths. It is not simply a lower version of academic A/L: it has a different programme structure and an NVQ-linked outcome. Compare the occupations offered, participating school, training location, progression options and whether the field matches the student’s interests.
Compare other recognised education and training routes
Technical, vocational and other education providers can have different entry requirements. Before paying, verify the provider, awarding body, qualification level, assessment, progression route and total fees with the relevant official authority. A course title containing “diploma” or “foundation” does not by itself prove recognition or guarantee admission to a degree.
Be especially careful with claims that a short course is “equal to A/L” without naming the framework, regulator and institution that accepts it. Ask for the recognition statement in writing and verify it with the receiving university, employer or government body.
A/L Science stream requirements
Searchers often ask for a single minimum grade for A/L Bio Science or Physical Science. The official national benchmark reviewed for this article does not set a universal rule such as “A for Science” or “B for Mathematics.”
In practice, schools offering Biological Science or Physical Science can consider:
- the O/L Science and Mathematics grades;
- the number of applicants;
- laboratory and classroom capacity;
- the available subject teachers; and
- whether the required subject combination is offered in the chosen medium.
Therefore, a student may meet the national A/L qualification benchmark but not meet a particular school’s Science-stream cutoff. Do not rely on an unofficial grade table shared on social media. Ask the school for its current written criteria.
Can you do A/L Science without passing O/L Science?
The Ministry’s general benchmark does not separately list O/L Science as compulsory. That does not mean every school must admit a student without an O/L Science pass to a Science stream. The school can use Science and Mathematics performance when allocating limited places.
The safest answer is: you may satisfy the general A/L benchmark, but Science-stream admission must be confirmed with the school.
Commerce, Arts and Technology requirements
The same distinction applies to Commerce, Arts and Technology. There is no verified national table in the benchmark above requiring one fixed O/L grade for every stream across every school.

Commerce stream
A qualifying O/L result does not guarantee every Commerce combination. Ask whether the school offers the intended Accounting, Business Studies, Economics, Business Statistics or other approved subjects and whether timetable blocks restrict the combination. A school may also consider Mathematics or related O/L results when demand exceeds places.
Arts stream
Arts can include languages, social sciences, humanities, religious studies and aesthetic subjects under approved combinations. Availability is school-specific. A subject shown nationally may not run at the chosen school or medium, especially when enrolment is small or a specialist teacher is unavailable.
Technology stream
Technology admission depends on whether the school is equipped and staffed for the relevant pathway. Confirm Engineering Technology or Biosystems Technology, Science for Technology and the third-subject options, as well as practical facilities. Do not infer Technology availability from a general statement that a school has A/L classes.
Choosing subjects for a future degree
Entry to Grade 12 is only the first decision. Some university courses require particular A/L streams or subjects. Before confirming the combination, compare current course requirements in the University Grants Commission handbook and any non-state or overseas programmes the student may consider.
Keep alternatives open where possible. A combination chosen only because it is available locally can close a later degree route. Ask the school how it handles subject changes and the deadline; do not assume changes remain possible after classes begin.

English-medium A/L requirements
The Ministry’s five-pass, three-credit benchmark does not publish a separate universal O/L English grade for English-medium A/L admission.
An English-medium place depends on three practical questions:
- Does the school teach your chosen stream in English?
- Does it offer your exact three-subject combination in English?
- What English grade or assessment does the school use for selection?
A strong O/L English result can support an application, but this article cannot accurately label one grade as the national requirement without a current official rule. Confirm the school’s policy before choosing subjects or transferring.
Can you do A/L as a private candidate?
Yes. The Department of Examinations registers both school and private candidates. However, private-candidate exam registration is not the same as Grade 12 school admission.
Private applicants should use the Department of Examinations website and read the notice for the relevant A/L examination year. Candidate status, application dates, permitted subjects, practical tests and document instructions can change. Do not use an old application deadline from a blog post.
If you are still attending school, check the current candidate instructions before applying privately. The Department’s published private-candidate notices have treated school attendance and private candidature as separate statuses.
The A/L Vocational Stream is different
Students who do not meet the academic-stream benchmark may have another government-school pathway. In its 2025 Grade 12 Vocational Stream admission notice, the Ministry stated that O/L examination results would not be considered for admission to that stream.
The vocational route includes Grade 12 study followed by NVQ Level 4 training in Grade 13. Availability is limited to participating schools and the occupations listed in the current intake notice, so check the latest Ministry announcement rather than assuming every school offers it.
How to confirm your A/L eligibility
Use this order to get a reliable answer for your own result:
- Compare your result with the Ministry benchmark: five passes and three credit passes, with the subject wording noted above.
- Choose the A/L stream, three subjects and preferred medium.
- Ask your current school for its Grade 12 selection criteria.
- If transferring, check the receiving school’s application, cutoff and vacancy notice.
- For an unclear case, contact the zonal education office or the Ministry of Education.
- For private exam entry, follow only the Department of Examinations notice for the relevant year.
Take your official O/L result sheet when requesting confirmation. Ask for the decision in writing if a deadline, transfer or subject choice depends on it.
Questions to ask the A/L section head
Use the same questions at every school so that answers can be compared:
- Does my complete O/L result meet this school’s Grade 12 entry rule?
- Does the school use a higher cutoff for my chosen stream?
- Which exact three-subject combinations will run this year?
- Which combinations are available in Sinhala, Tamil or English medium?
- Are places available for students transferring from another school?
- How are applicants ranked if demand exceeds capacity?
- What documents and deadlines apply, and is there an appeal process?
- What happens if a subject does not attract enough students to run?
A verbal “probably” is not enough when the student must leave another school or reject a different offer. Ask for the selection notice, application acknowledgement or written offer.
A/L entry planning timeline
The exact dates depend on when results and school notices are issued, but the work can be organised in this order.
Before O/L results
Identify two or three possible streams based on interests, performance and future-course prerequisites. List schools that actually teach the likely combinations and media. Collect identity and school records, but do not rely on predicted grades as an admission decision.
When results are released
Download or obtain the official result, check every subject and read the current notices from the existing and intended schools. Compare the result first with the general benchmark and then with the school’s stream criteria. Note deadlines immediately because transfer windows can be short.
Before accepting a place
Get the qualification, stream, three subjects, medium, school and campus confirmed. Compare travel, teaching availability and any lawful costs. If changing school, keep the current place until the new placement is documented.
During the first weeks of Grade 12
Check that the enrolled subjects match the approved combination and future plans. Learn the school’s deadline and process for a subject change. Obtain the syllabus, assessment calendar and practical requirements early; a delayed start can be difficult to recover in a two-year programme.
Applying to an A/L class after O/L
If you remain at the same school
Ask when Grade 12 selection forms are issued, how streams are allocated, which subjects run in each medium and whether an appeal or second-choice process exists. Existing enrolment does not necessarily guarantee the first-choice stream.
If you transfer to another government school
Use the school’s or education authority’s current notice. Applications can require the official O/L result, school-leaving or transfer documents, identity records and proof relevant to the stated selection process. Places depend on vacancies after the school’s own students are allocated.
Do not leave the current school until the new place and subject combination are confirmed. Keep copies of applications and obtain written acknowledgement when possible.
If you apply to a private or fee-levying school
The institution may set its own higher entry grades, assessment, interview and fees. Confirm whether it teaches the Sri Lankan GCE A/L or a foreign A Level such as Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel. These are different qualifications even when the school uses the phrase “Advanced Level.”
Request a written offer naming the qualification, three subjects, medium, grade or year, campus and total compulsory charges.
Documents to prepare
The exact list varies, but a student may be asked for:
- official O/L result sheet;
- birth certificate and identity document;
- recent school reports;
- school-leaving or transfer certificate;
- passport-sized photographs;
- application form and subject choices; and
- documents required by the particular school or authority.
Check whether originals, certified copies or online uploads are required. Do not send result credentials or identity documents through an unverified social-media account.
Do not confuse A/L entry with university eligibility
The O/L benchmark on this page answers whether a candidate is counted as qualified to proceed toward A/L. It is not the minimum result for state-university admission after sitting A/L.
For the 2025 A/L examination and 2025/26 admissions cycle, the UGC’s official admission notice states that a candidate needs at least an S grade in all three approved subjects in one sitting, within a maximum of three attempts, plus at least 30% in the Common General Paper. Course selection then depends on Z-score, district and course-specific rules.
Those are later university-admission rules. They do not change the O/L benchmark for entering A/L classes. They also do not mean three S grades guarantee a particular degree, because cutoff marks and prerequisites vary.
Use the current UGC admissions handbook for the examination and academic year that applies when the student finishes A/L. Rules can change before a younger student reaches university.

The Department of Examinations lists hotline 1911 on its official site. Use official contact channels and take the full result sheet; a short social-media comment cannot reliably decide an individual eligibility case.
