The Sri Lankan year is shaped by two calendars at once. The Gregorian calendar carries fixed holidays like Independence Day (4 February), May Day and Christmas; the lunar calendar carries a Poya day every full moon — twelve public holidays that shift year to year, of which Vesak Poya (May) and Esala Poya (July or August) are the largest. On top of that sits the business event season — the Colombo International Book Fair in September, gem and jewellery shows, and the Lanka Premier League cricket window — and the annual pageant, media and gaming milestones that get their own dated coverage below.

Three overlapping strands, all covered from the organiser's own materials rather than event aggregators:
- Cultural & religious. The Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April, twelve Poya days across the year, Vesak lantern festivals in May, the Kandy Esala Perahera, Deepavali, Christmas and Duruthu Poya. Dates are confirmed against the government's annual gazette.

What are the biggest annual events in Sri Lanka?
The Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April is the largest cultural moment of the year, followed by Vesak Poya (May full moon) and Esala Poya, which marks the Kandy Esala Perahera in July or August. Deepavali (October or November), Christmas, and the Duruthu Poya festival in Kelaniya (January) round out the religious calendar. Which months are peak festival season in Sri Lanka?
April is peak because the Sinhala and Tamil New Year effectively pauses the country for a week. May–August is the second peak with three of the year's twelve Poya (full moon) holidays, the Kandy Esala Perahera and the Colombo season for international conferences. December and January are lighter but include Christmas and Duruthu Poya, and the sports calendar picks up with the Lanka Premier League.
Are Sri Lanka's public holidays fixed dates or lunar?
Both. Every full-moon day (Poya) is a public holiday and its date shifts by the lunar month, so a Poya can move by up to 30 days year to year. Fixed-date holidays include Independence Day (4 February), May Day (1 May), Christmas Day and the Sinhala and Tamil New Year cluster (13–14 April). Government gazettes the following year's dates in November of the current year.
When is Vesak Poya in Sri Lanka?
Vesak Poya falls on the full moon day of May and commemorates the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and passing. It is a public holiday, the day that follows is also a holiday, and cities across the country go dark to display Vesak lanterns and pandals. The exact date shifts year to year with the lunar cycle and is confirmed in the annual government gazette.
